Chris wins on a tough day at Smiggies
Once again, as Is reported in nearly every match fished on Smiggies, the fishing proved to be
extremely tough going for virtually all of the sixteen competitors. The match followed the similar
pattern of nearly all of the fish caught within the first hour! It is amazing the difference in the mood of
this water when a match takes place on it....
Chris Crane was the only angler who managed to catch pretty steadily for most of the day. 11lb
4oz was a remarkable result from peg 1 which has not fished well for many weeks. Chris caught, mainly, Roach from
just at the bottom of the far shelf using Long Pole tactics. Most of his match winning weight coming to pinkie with
just a small amount of groundbait fed at the start.
Yours truly managed runner up spot for the second time in two weeks . With eight good sized Silvers in the first eight casts things were looking
pretty good......Then, that was it!! from a fish a chuck to being absolutely biteless! for the next four
hours. Constant feeding of maggot to the far bank eventually brought two more 6oz Chub to the net in the last
hour, but nearly all of my 7lb was caught in the opening twenty minutes!
Steve Kinch and Keith Macfarlane drew next pegs 25 and 26 and managed to end up with
identical weights, tying for third place with 5lb 4oz. Steve caught small Silvers the and odd small
Skimmer, all from the far bank, and, again, nearly all in the first hour. Keith, on the other hand, netted the only
"Proper" Bream landed on the day, and along with a couple of small Skimmers it was enough to share the Third place
and section 3 prizes.
Den Porter took Section 1 from peg 5 with 4lb and Section 2 went to Simon Pepper with 4lb
13oz from peg 11.
