Winter League starts with a bumper turnout
The milder temperatures that we have been experiencing of late, certainly brought out the Matchmen
for the first round of this years Winter League. In all, there were twenty two anglers present at the
9.00am draw. A number usually more usual in the opening rounds of the summer, Sunday League! .
If you managed to draw a peg in the right areas there were plenty of fish for the taking. It is
usual for the Carp to shoal up at this time of year. What is difficult to predict, though, is where they might be!!
What was very strange, though, was the fact that many anglers caught, or hooked a Carp or two in the opening
ten minutes of the match and that turned out to be their only action of the day!!
After the initial mayhem the next hour or so was deathly quite, with almost everyone
fishless. Jason Farmery was the first to start catching. About one hour in Jason hooked his first Carp and
spent the next forty five minutes catching, almost, a fish a chuck. Fishing close to the far bank Jasons rig
hooked onto a far side bramble. He managed to get his rig back unscathed but the commotion caused must have
scared the wary Carp away from his peg....Jason picking up 4th place with 33lb 4oz from peg 3.
Den Porter was the main beneficiary of Jasons mishap as a few minutes later he started catching at the same rate that
Jason had earlier. Den kept on catching right until the all out. The Winter League Matches are only
five hour affairs, had it been the normal six hour match Den would almost certainly have topped the 100lb
mark. But he was quite happy (unusual to use the words Den Porter and happy in the same sentence
 ) to take 1st place with 82lb 12oz.
The other major battle was at the southern end of the lake with Chris Crane and Steve
Harrison battling it out between themselves on adjoining pegs. Chris started first, catching really
well, on peg 16, after the first hour, and was building what seemed like an unassailable lead. Fish
being fish, though, decided to drift off from Chris's peg and settled in Steve's. Steve had been,
virtually, biteless whilst Chris was bagging up. It seemed like the less that Chris was now catching, the
more Steve was putting in the net. It was a really close fought duel Steve just edging out Chris by 13oz!! at
the weigh in. Steve claiming the runner up spot from peg 14 with 63lb12oz, and Chris 3rd place with 62lb
15oz.
Paul Cooke took Section 1 with 17lb from peg 10. Section 2 going to Simon Pepper with 11lb
12oz from peg 21. Vinnie Logi's 6lb 2oz was enough to take the toughest section of the day, Section 3. Steve
Kinch put 16lb 4oz on the scales to take home the Section 4 prize from peg 46.
